One-Skillet Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole
A sloppy joe is a hamburger bun-based sandwich with ground beef, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings.
The dish was created in the early twentieth century in the United States. A popular weeknight dish that both kids and adults enjoy is Tater Tot Casserole.
Browned ground beef is combined with fresh green peppers, onions, and a homemade sloppy Joe sauce that has been cooked. Then, for a hearty dinner-time feast, it’s topped with a layer of gooey cheddar cheese, followed by tots and another layer of gooey cheddar.

-
Preheat an oven-safe 12-inch skillet over medium-low heat. Add a few drops of extra-virgin olive oil to the pan and cook the garlic for a minute or two, until it is aromatic and light golden brown. Increase the heat to medium/medium high and cook the ground beef until it is no longer pink, breaking it up and stirring as it cooks
-
Remove the meat from the pan and drain the oil.
-
While the meat is browning, set the oven rack in the centre and preheat the oven to 425°F. Make the sauce while the meat is browning.
-
Toss the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper to taste in a large measuring cup.
-
Stir in the pinto beans after pouring the sauce over the browned meat. Cook, stirring periodically, for 5 to 10 minutes, or until heated through and slightly thickened.
-
In a skillet, smooth out the sloppy joe mixture and top with 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese. Place the frozen tater tots on top in a single layer.
-
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the potato tots have browned.

As ketchup contains a lot of sweetness, if you want a more savoury sloppy joe mix, cut back on the brown sugar.
