One-Skillet Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole

A sloppy joe is a hamburger bun-based sandwich with ground beef, onions, tomato sauce or ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and other seasonings.

The dish was created in the early twentieth century in the United States. A popular weeknight dish that both kids and adults enjoy is Tater Tot Casserole.

Browned ground beef is combined with fresh green peppers, onions, and a homemade sloppy Joe sauce that has been cooked. Then, for a hearty dinner-time feast, it’s topped with a layer of gooey cheddar cheese, followed by tots and another layer of gooey cheddar.

  1. Preheat an oven-safe 12-inch skillet over medium-low heat. Add a few drops of extra-virgin olive oil to the pan and cook the garlic for a minute or two, until it is aromatic and light golden brown. Increase the heat to medium/medium high and cook the ground beef until it is no longer pink, breaking it up and stirring as it cooks

  2. Remove the meat from the pan and drain the oil.

  3. While the meat is browning, set the oven rack in the centre and preheat the oven to 425°F. Make the sauce while the meat is browning.

  4. Toss the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and freshly ground black pepper to taste in a large measuring cup.

  5. Stir in the pinto beans after pouring the sauce over the browned meat. Cook, stirring periodically, for 5 to 10 minutes, or until heated through and slightly thickened.

  6. In a skillet, smooth out the sloppy joe mixture and top with 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese. Place the frozen tater tots on top in a single layer.

  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the potato tots have browned.

Note

As ketchup contains a lot of sweetness, if you want a more savoury sloppy joe mix, cut back on the brown sugar.
